Spiced Citrus Vetiver review and update

written by Laurie March 18, 2013

Thank you, Neil, for your beautiful review of Spiced Citrus Vetiver
on The Black Narcissus! I agree that it’s a softer take on vetiver. Glad you enjoyed trying it! You have a lyric way of writing that makes visiting your blog a treat. 🙂

Neil’s review was actually helpful to me coming at this moment. I opened a new bottle of vetiver several weeks ago (a larger bottle that will last longer), and it’s a bit stronger. I’m having to find the right dose to be equivalent to my previous batch of Spiced Citrus Vetiver. I’m finding that I like a range of options and need to pick one. I’ll try to keep the scent pretty close to the previous batch because that one received good feedback, but it would be easy to make it edgier by adding more vetiver.

I’m also starting to play with some natural florals. I have a number of things I’ve been wanting to use in formulas. I got lovely new tuberose and neroli oils last year, and a ylang complete. I also have a gorgeous mimosa that I used in Nostalgie and I’d like to highlight it in a natural. I also just got a new rose essence that is extra special. Lots to play with, but not all in the same scent, lol.

Neil’s writing is amazing as you said! And thanks to him I am a vetiver convert ! So I would not be opposed to a stronger vetiver in Spicy Citrus Vetiver (if you want my humble opinion 🙂 )
And I am drooling thinking about all of those natural florals and the gorgeous natural perfume you are going to be making with them_LOL!
Laurie, it’s great to see you back in action!
And happy spring!

It sounds lovely!
Dammit, now I’m even more annoyed about the new shipping restrictions the Royal Mail have put in place. I want to try this! I can see I will have to try and bribe one of my US friends to act as an intermediate postbox for me… 😉

Thanks, Tania!

That works pretty well in most cases since friends would only be sending an occasional package (lower risk) as opposed to my sending hundreds of packages if I I shipped to all international customers. The UK has gotten especially tough though.

A long-term goal for me is to make oil versions of as many scents as I can, starting with the naturals. The oil versions could be shipped since they’d be alcohol-free. I’ve tried an oil version of the vetiver and it’s a little different in oil but it does work.

Ooh, oils – there’s an idea! 🙂 That sounds good, I hope they work out.

Yes, the UK is now a problematic area for perfume sellers, and collectors too. I don’t know why they changed the rules, all of a sudden. Especially since large perfume importers are free to go on doing so. Surely a pallet full of perfume is much more dangerous?
I dunno, it just seems like yet another erosion of individual freedoms in the name of the all-powerful ‘health and safety’. Which is what control freaks cite when they want to make daft restrictions and the ‘terrorist threat’ doesn’t apply…. 😉

I agree, we really need exclusions for small quantities!

I’m very glad to see the naturals are getting so much positive reception, but I’m doubly excited about the florals that you’re playing with. I love the mimosa note so can’t wait to see/smell what you do with it.

I’d like to go in the hay/beeswax direction with the miimosa.:) It already has that feeling to it, and I just got some nice new beeswax. Maybe some jasmine and orange blossom in there too. Let’s do some spring playing with florals! 🙂

No such thing as too much vetiver! But then I’m the one who is very happy to wear straight vetiver e.o. as perfume. Love these naturals!

I think I solved my dilemma. I tried splitting the vetiver component between the woodsy Sri Lanka and a CO2 oil, and I’m liking the mix. I want to test it a bit more, but I think this may do the trick. I love the woodsy character of the Sri Lanka in this, but a bit of the CO2 will add a touch of the more expected vetiver profile. Need to send you a sample!

I’m happy to sniff!
