Sonoma Scent Studio Updates

Happy Thanksgiving!

written by Laurie November 25, 2009

There’s that turkey again, lol (if you’ve followed the blog over the last year or two you’ve seen him before). This wild turkey was walking along near my garden with a bunch of buddies when I snapped that photo several years ago. I’ll have to get a new picture for next year; maybe I can get a picture of the mother turkeys with their little stream of babies running behind (so funny), but they run a bit fast to catch on camera.

I’ll work through the holiday weekend to keep orders shipping out, but Thursday is a USPS mail holiday, of course, and UPS takes both Thursday and Friday off. Most US orders are shipping Priority Mail and will continue to go out Friday and Saturday. I think our PO is open Friday to send more international orders out, but if not those orders will keep shipping starting Monday.

The Posh Peasant is having a 15% off sale with code IHeartTPP until Nov 30; they carry samples and decants of Sonoma Scent Studio fragrances, so if you were thinking of placing an order with them this is a good time. They carry many other brands as well and you can easily get into mischief there. 🙂

Wanted to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving holiday, hopefully spent with friends and family. My brother and his family will be coming later today and staying through the weekend. I’d like to spend a bit of time with them because it’s been quite a few months since they have been here and it’ll be nice to visit with them. Thanksgiving makes us pause to consider the good things in our lives, and I’m thankful for friends, family, my beautiful surroundings, and for being able to do something that brings me pleasure. Thanks so much for your support and encouragement; I sure appreciate it and know other indie perfumers appreciate the wonderful online fragrance community too! Sending best wishes for a great holiday weekend!

Hi Donna,

Thanks so much! I just returned after a nice evening with family. My brother’s kids brought their dog and two kittens so my Mom has a busy house between the kids, critters, and cooking. It was really fun to relax and visit with them this evening.

I was thinking of you today! I worked on Ambre Noir this morning because I love this new cistus in it and I just have to try a few things with it. I think you’ll be a good sweetness check for me. No musk in this so it won’t give you the sweet musk sensitivity problem. I’ll keep going on it tomorrow morning and update on the blog soon.

Thanks very much for the good wishes and hope you have a great rest of the four-day weekend!

WOO HOO – I can’t wait to try it!

I’m going for my second (!) big T’giving dinner this afternoon, which is funny as I’m not a big eater (vegetarian, etc.) at all. Go figure. But I love seeing my family and there will be nieces and nephews at this one that I didn’t get to see yesterday.

Let me know when you’re ready to send as I want to order some of the other samples that I missed the last time. Also, I was thinking that I’d love for you to do a Christmas-y fir scent. I think it would be right up your alley and you’d do a fabulous job on it.

But don’t work too hard – enjoy your weekend!

I have a yummy fir balsam absolute that I’d love to put to use. It’s funny though because when I have people sniff it straight I get different reactions. Most people exclaim “Christmas tree!” and like it. I smell a subtle but pretty jammy aspect to it too, but when I mention that some people say “Oh yes” (possibly just to humor me, lol) and some say they don’t get the jam, just the tree. It’s the kind of ingredient that people sometimes want in a room spray or seasonal scent rather than in a year-round perfume. Wazamba did a great job incorporating a green pine type of note into an incense scent though (love the smokiness in that one). For a holiday scent I’d want to team the fir with warm spices, but it’d be fun to play with that and do something different than the common citrus/spice/fir type of scent.

Trying the Ambre Noir again this morning and want to increase the cistus more — I’m getting braver with it. Always takes a few trials with a new ingredient to see how much you can use without going overboard.

Have a great part 2 of Tday today! 🙂

I can see what you mean about the jammy aspect of fir. I love that! And lol! I was trying to be diplomatic and not mention names. Where I said “it would be right up your alley…”, I originally had – “I have a sample of Wazamba, and I think you’d do a better job”! While I really liked Wazamba, it bothers me that it literally lasted through three (!) showers. Perfume should NOT have the half-life of plutonium!

Lol! I just tested a tiny drop of Wazamba and it lasted a long time too, but it got better as it went so I didn’t mind too much. I prefer incense without pine types of notes, but I liked what they did, especially the smokiness.

For the holidays it’d be fun to do a more traditional spiced fir but maybe with woods instead of citrus.

One fun and unusual take on fir absolute is Mandy Aftel’s Fig. Have you sniffed it? It’s a deep, rich, gourmand fig newton type of fig, not the green coconut type. Yummy. She takes advantage of that jammy aspect of fir in a really creative way. It lasts a long time, maybe too long for you, lol! I think it’d wash off though; I know what you mean about how annoying it is when you are ready for something to be gone and can’t even scrub it off.

Hi Laurie & Donna!

I enjoyed following your conversation. The mention of balsam fir caught mny attention. It’s my favorinte christmas tree. Although not dense for decorations, it imparts the nicest smell! It would be fun to see what you do with it – but I think I would perceive it as something for the home than my person, lol! Just my 2 cents…
Laurie – Ambre Noir is so beautiful already. Can’t wait to see (or smell) your improvements!
Wishing a great weekend to you both.

Hi Ann,

I love fir Christmas trees too — they smell so good the first few days in the house. My Mom’s favorite is Douglas fir so that’s what I grew up with for our Christmas trees. We’d go cut one down each year at the tree farm.

This Ambre Noir is getting different enough that I could offer both the original and this new one under a new name if people prefer that. I’ll finish this and get some feedback. I just love this cistus and wish I’d found it sooner. The ones I’ve tried in the past have had harsh notes that I didn’t like, but this one is beautiful to me and adds a lot of oomph and longevity to the labdanum already in the base.

Thanks for stopping by! Hope your holiday weekend is going great too!
